Caribbean travel tips and tricks

Caribbean travel, islands, all inclusive vactions and more!

Archive for February, 2009

I am looking for a place to travel to after graduation which doesn't cost a lot of money and has a lot of things to do. The cost of the flight isn't as important but I will be flying from IND.

Unfortunately the Caribbean isn't cheap. The least expensive time to travel the Caribbean is in the off season.(April15-Dec 15)

In Cancun or Riviera Maya Mexico you can get some good packages that include food and drink.

Punta Cana in Dominican Republic

US Virgin Islands (St Thomas or St John)

Check out Frontier Airline packages. They have some good deals. Apple Vacations or Funjet.com

Good Luck)

& What type of ship enabled sailors to travel farther than ever before during the Columbus period and the shipbuilder was WHO????
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEST ANSWER GETS 10 POINTS!!!!!!!!!

Columbus made 4 trips to the Carribiean and South America.

It wasn't so much the Ship that enabled Columbus to travel so far, heck the Vickings made it to Canada years before him in lesser craft. The major problem was money, who would back a voyage, pay the sailors, buy the provisions and outfit the voyage. The other major impediment was there were no accurate maps of how far it was between Europe and America. Columbus's voyage and his map makeing ability showed the rest of Europe exactly how far it was and how much provisions were needed.

The Santa Maria was a nao, the flagship of the Columbus fleet. It was a merchant ship, between 200-600 tons. The boat's length was 75 feet with a wide beam, 25 feet. This allowed it to carry more people and cargo. She had a deep draft, 6 feet. The vessel had three masts, a mainmast, a foremast, and a mizzenmast. Five sails altogether were attached to these masts. Each mast carried one large sail. The foresail and mainsail were square; the sail on the mizzen was a triangular sail known as a lateen mizzen. The ship had a smaller topsail on the mainmast above the mainsail and on the foremast above the foresail. In addition, the ship carried a small square sail, a spritsail, on the bowsprit. In the diagram above, the spritsail cannot be seen. Each sail was attached to a long wooden pole, a yard, which spread the sail out across the top and held it open. The Santa Maria also had a crow’s nest on the mainmast. It had a raised stern. There was a forecastle in the bow of the ship. Most of the force used to drive this ship came from the largest mainsail. The other sails were used for "trimming." Though many sailors believed that the Santa Maria was a fine ship for her day, Columbus was not so impressed. He did not think it was a ship fit for discovery. Because of the deep draft, the vessel was not suited for sailing near reefs and shallow island waters. In fact, the craft ran aground off Hispaniola and had to be abandoned.

The Nina and the Pinta were the same type of ship. These two ships in the fleet of Columbus were known as caravels. A caravel had a shallower draft than a nao, so it could move around in the water more easily. A caravel was150-300 tons. It did not have much cargo space, but it was able to sail over difficult waters easily. It was square-rigged on its foremasts and mainmasts, but used a lateen sail on the mizzen to help in tacking. It was so easy to control that sailors could easily explore shallow bays and the mouths of rivers. A caravel could hold about twenty crew members. They usually slept on the deck and would go below only if the weather was bad. Pinta was a caravel, a smaller, lighter, and faster ship than the tubby Santa Maria. She probably had three masts, and most likely carried sails like those of Santa Maria, except for the topsail, and perhaps the spritsail.

What would be the benefits and what the drawbacks for the US of invading all the Caribbean island countries with the intention of seizing and selling off (or just taxing) the land and businesses there and taking the revenues? What's preventing them from doing this today? Where would it stop if they then took all of Central America and then Oceania and then kept going? If the US is the world's strongest military power (with diplomatic immunity from sanctions no matter what it does), how are they better off by not trying to grab more world from themselves by force?

actually the US wrote and signed a treaty called the magna carta that prevented themselves or any other eastern country from invading and taking over land in the west. That is why there has never been a world empire since the US reveloution.

I want to know the carribean islands south of Florida. And what is it's Spanish name? I need this for my Spanish class.

I bet you are referring to the Florida Keys. They are part of the US and stretch from Miami nearly straight to the west. Also, Cuba is only 90 miles south from Florida and is the closest. Those are what I think of when I hear "just south" of Florida.

Cuba is probably the spanish name for Cuba though. The Keys don't have a spanish name as they are US–but I guess whatever spanish for "keys" is.

A group of friends looking for a nice all-inclusive resort for a week long vacation in May or June. Want to have a good time, but under control. Where would you recommend we travel? Aruba, Cancun, Bahahmas, Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico…those are the places we're considering but any other recommendations are welcome. Other than recommendations of the best destination we'd also like insight on where any normal 21 year old would enjoy.

Trying to plan a vaca - first in since 1998 and need some help as to where in the bahamas/caribbean would be the best for the money (don't need the 'cheapest' but looking for the best value for the money spent) and best recommended by others to stay. Prefer all inclusive and not too noisy but would love a casino nearby! Help!

Best prices are generally found in Sept/Oct - we go every year to the Caribbean and that is when we go. If we where to do the exact same vacation right now it would cost 3x the amount we spend. For example: last Sept we paid 1500. for one week - that was a 5 golden apple hotel, airfare, food and transfers - everything!! It was an amazing RIU property and we will continue to visit every year. GOOD LUCK and have a great time!!!

Two months after the U.S. Government instituted new passport regulations for Caribbean and Latin American travel under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), both foreign officials and visitors have called the initial transition a success. Requiring passports for air travel between the Caribbean and the United States, the WHTI was enacted to alleviate security concerns regarding U.S. border security. It was predicted by many that the initiative would create noticeable hassles for travelers and resorts in early 2007. Yet, most resorts and travel bureaus saw no decrease in American visitors, while tourists were able to make successful arrangements and navigate the new passport restrictions.

That said - don’t let the smooth initial transition catch you off guard. Travel experts speculate that the summer months could provide more difficulty for tourists and resorts alike. Due to the fact that so many of the visitors to Grand Cayman during the first few months of this year already possessed long-standing passports, the delays and hassles were minimal. Yet, as family travel to the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean picks up throughout the summer, experts fear that many tourists may overlook the new passport regulations - especially for their children.

If you have begun planning a family vacation to Grand Cayman, now is the time to add passport applications to the top of your checklist. As it takes at least 6 weeks (with some current reports at 10 weeks) for the U.S. State Department to process passports, submitting your applications now will give you enough time to plan your activities for the summer. Simply because there wasn’t a rush on new passport applications at the beginning of the year, doesn’t mean there won’t be a backlog of applications for the summer travel season.

For those concerned about the additional cost of passports for their family, some resorts have developed a unique solution. In an effort to lessen tourists’ concerns about the cost and hassle of passports, hotels and resorts - such as the Marriott and Renaissance Mexico and Caribbean Resorts - have implanted discounts to new passport holders. For instance, if you arrive at the Grand Cayman Marriott and the island is your first stamped destination, you will receive a $100 resort credit. In most cases, discounts like these simply require your family’s passports being shown to the front desk staff at the resort. Furthermore, as you probably finalized your passports well before travel, a credit like this could offer a nice financial cushion for your family vacation.

To help you plan the perfect Caribbean family vacation, here is helpful checklist for the passport application process. Remember, it is recommended to begin the passport application process as soon as you know you are going to travel to Grand Cayman or anywhere else throughout the Caribbean or Latin America:

• First, acquire proof of U.S. citizenship for all passport applicants. Most travelers use birth certificates, but expired passports can also be used.

• Have a pair of passport photos taken at a drugstore, copy shop or any other location.

• Obtain passport applications from the U.S. State Department website or from any post office or government facility.

• If anyone in your family is receiving their first passport, you must visit a passport acceptance facility with your passport photos, proof of citizenship and photo ID to have the applications validated. Passport acceptance facilities include courts, post offices, libraries and government offices. Check the U.S. State Department website for all locations.

• Send your applications with payment from these approved locations.

• If you have planned ahead, you shouldn’t need to expedite your passport application through the U.S. State Department. For $60, the Passport Services Office offers expedited shipping - usually ensuring delivery of passports within 3-4 weeks. Also, if you’re family is in a time crunch, several services can obtain passports in as little as 24 hours for a greater fee.

If you are like me and have tried to buy an all inclusive cheap Caribbean vacation between Christmas and Easter, and totally failed to gat any kind of a bargain, you will have realised that this is high season. It was many years ago that I checked out both Jumby Bay and Sandy Lane, and I noticed a dramatic drop in prices that began in May. I was able to get an incredible bargain to Jumby which I couldn’t frankly believe.

The whole matter of finding the best time for Caribbean Cheap Deals is well worth investigating. Not being a celebrity or someone who needs to be seen, all of us ordinary mortals do not need to be in Barbados between December and Easter. The main reason it is high season of course is the awful European weather at that time of year, and not necessarily the weather in the Caribbean. Also places like Antigua and Barbados are quickly accessible from Europe. The jet set pushes prices up by their demands on hotels and restaurants, which in turn increases prices even more.
On principle don’t go there at that time.

Come May the prices drop dramatically as already discussed, and one of the main reasons for this is the beginning of the tourist season in Europe, and the southern United States. It isn’t as you might have thought because of the onset of the hurricane season, which is later on in July and August.

A lot of people are starting to go in July and August, which has risk attached to it, but there is a theory that the southern islands like Barbados, Tobago and Grenada are too far south to be in the hurricane belt, but Grenada disproved that two years ago. If you want a Caribbean Cheap Deal at this time, you will get one, but beware.

Take a look at some caribbean options at http://www.worldwidevacationspots.com/categories/Caribbean-Hotel-Hideaways/

The best time to go to the Caribbean for an all inclusive cheap Caribbean vacation or any kind of Caribbean Cheap Deal is May or June. The weather is quite beautiful, and there are no children, as it is term time!!

Go to the Caribbean in May June, for the best prices, when you will be astonished at some of the deals on offer.
