What does the term adventure travel mean to you? It can mean many different things to different people and for those that are uninitiated into the world of adventure travel it often involves Indiana Jones types of images. Things like Man against nature, struggling to cross a scorching desert, or a stormy sea. Possible risking their life in some far flung region of the world that is torn apart by war and strife. Or it might bring up images of crawling deep into a pitch black cave or dangling from the site of a mountain on a rope.

Do all of these images equate to adventure travel? Well, not really, some people that are into adventure travel might seek out some of these more extreme types of activities but not everyone. Adventure travel is really whatever you want it to be. It might or might not involve physical risk this is not a requirement. It might or might not mean traveling to an exotic far flung place. It might or might not cost a small fortune it really depends on you. Any time you travel somewhere, anywhere if you have a new experience that you have never had before or some type of new experience that you don’t do everyday then you have had an adventure.

Of course there are as many different types of adventure travel as there are people in the world. So often you can find something that is exciting to you and based on your own interests. For example a history buff might not be the least interested in a vacation in Las Vegas or a visit to Disney World. But he or she might be thrilled to tour the Tower of London, visit the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, or stand at the Irish graveside of some long dead ancestor. The discovery of some previously unknown ancestors name in the archival records of a small town can be as exciting for the history lover as catching a trophy rainbow trout is to an ardent fisherman.

While most people would agree that adventure travel that involves activities like sky diving, mountain climbing, kayaking the rapids or caving is an exciting adventure indeed. But adventure travel can also include a leisurely trip on the Mississippi River in a paddle wheeler, a saunter across the English landscape in search of a certain species of bird, a tour of the wineries of southern France, or a shell-collecting outing on an out-of-the-way Caribbean beach.

Adventure travel does not have to be to a far away place. You do not have to go by plane, train or bus to experience some adventure travel. There are many opportunities well within driving distance of your house. They are not as well revealed as major sites or operations, so people have to look for them. They can include small local museums, houses of special interest (the birthplace of a famous person), small sanctuaries for wildlife and flora, restored buildings or even communities dating back to historic times, and so on. Even if one does not own a car, there are sometimes local bus tours to this site, or excursions organized by social groups.

Sure adventure travel might take you to that far flung place on a crazy intense adventure and test of wills but it can just as easily be a trip to somewhere close to your home and local. Adventure travel is wherever you can find it and on whatever scale you are ready for.

Caribbean islands offer you Caribbean beaches that are second to none. The beaches here are sure to take your breath away. The beaches boast of white warm sand and clear pristine water. You can enjoy shade of coconut palms on some beaches while on others you can have a look at picturesque cliffs. So, there is no dearth of things to do on Caribbean beaches, be it sunbathing, or clicking the panoramic sites here or even collecting shells and swimming in the waters.

Caribbean beaches are essentially a delightful experience for anyone but before you take the plunge there are a few things you can try to remember.

It is true that swimming is very safe in Caribbean beaches but you should be careful of rip currents which are also known as undertow. It is always advisable not to swim alone because most of the Caribbean beaches don’t have lifeguards.

If you are thinking of taking sunbath, always apply sunscreen and drink a lot of fluids. You would find that most of the Caribbean beaches have public beach that could be accessed by anyone but there are beaches which are exclusive for resort guests only. And yes, when it comes to resorts, you can not always trust brochure pictures. It is seen that with fall in prices, the facilities associated with resort beaches also deteriorate. And yes, one more point. There are some places where no one would care if you decide to bathe topless but at other Caribbean beaches, it won’t be allowed.

Tour to Caribbean is all about exploration and finding your own special places. The number of Caribbean beaches is many but we are going to touch a few important ones.

ARUBA

Aruba is certainly one of the most popular Caribbean beaches. What is more it has consistently been named as one of the best beaches in the world. So, if you want to swim in its pristine waters or go on sailing to un-chartered territories or want to enjoy the myriads avenues to get fun here, you can’t find a better place than Aruba. Its Palm Beach is considered one of the most popular places not just in Aruba but also in the whole of Caribbean and as such it remains very much crowded throughout the winters.

ANTIGUA

If you ask any locals here, you would be told that there is at least one Caribbean beach for you for every day of the year. And it is certainly not exaggeration. Half Moon Bay getting its name from crescent shape of moon and Dickenson Bay are the two more popular beaches. The former is a part of national park and as such there is no lack of activities here including wind surfing and snorkeling. You can easily get equipments for water sports on rent.

BAHAMAS

It is really a jewel amongst the Caribbean islands. It is one of the major tourist destinations here. This island caters to a variety of tastes right from shops, to restaurants to water sports to a casino for gambling enthusiasts. Paradise Island (Nassau) is a major center here. If you need a little bit privacy and seclusion visit Arawank Cay and Adelaide Village in Nassau. There are a number of shacks and huts here.

Nude beaches won’t be that much of problem here. After all we are talking about thousands of Caribbean beaches here. But always follow local customs and do look out for any family beaches near to you.

There are many ways you can get to Hawaii for your holiday vacation and one very common and popular way is to take a cruise to Hawaii. In this way, your holiday vacation starts when the cruise ship leaves the port of your embarkation.

The Norwegian Cruise Line or the NCL for short calls very often at Hawaiian various ports. American citizens will need to bring along their passports for this cruise because besides calling on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, the cruise ships also visit Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati.

This weekly 7 night cruise on the Norwegian Star, which is in service since 2001, will begin the cruise and end in the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu. Twice a year, the Norwegian Wind, a sister ship of the Norwegian Star, sails from Vancouver in Canada to Honolulu over a span of eleven days. Both the ships are huge and sometimes are sometimes called floating islands. Housed within the ships are swimming pools, volley ball and basketball courts, spas, fitness centers, theaters, beauty salons, dance clubs and of course, a wide array of restaurants catering to all taste buds.

The days of dining with two formal seating times for dinner at assigned tables are over. Passengers can now decide how they want to eat, when to eat and what to eat. They can choose from various cuisines such as Asian, Italian or French cuisines in either casual or formal wear. Modern day dinning in cruise ships are no longer formal affair unless you choose to opt for eating in formal restaurants.

To occupy yourself when in a cruise ship to Hawaii, you can go to computer classes, attend health and wellness seminars and enroll you kids in a variety of children’s programs. At each port of call, passengers may also choose a variety of land excursions and activities, such as visiting famous Hawaiian volcanoes, go scuba diving or whale watching or just simply relaxing by the beach.

Many other cruise ships also call on Hawaiian ports regularly. Some of these cruise lines include The Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess, Cunard, Seabourn and Celebrity cruise ships.

Booking and paying for your cruise way in advance could save you some money especially when the cruises are fully booked. However, if you intend to cruise to Hawaii during off peak season, then you can take a chance at last minute booking as the cruise lines may sell cheaper unsold tickets.

Before placing your cruise bookings, do ask about round trip, reduced fare air supplements and discounts for children traveling with full fare paying adults. Some cruises do offer summer family cruise packages and if you did not ask, you could never have known.

The paramountcy of security considerations in air travel is, for Americans, something that has been non negotiable since terrorists slammed commercial aircraft into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. If there were any likelihood of a lessening of intense feeling about air travel security, this was blown away by the recent plot unearthed in London against transatlantic flights to the USA.

This is the context in which we must view the decision last week by the US lawmakers to reaffirm the deadline for the coming into effect of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Under this measure, US citizens will be required to have passports in order to return home by air from trips to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. Having agreed to extend the previous deadline for its introduction from January 2006 to January 2007, US lawmakers were in no mood for a further extension.

But while insisting on the passport requirements for air travel beginning in January 2007, the lawmakers, apparently at the last minute, entertained lobbying efforts by the cruise-ship industry to postpone the application of the requirement to cruise travellers until June 2009. This is pretty much in line with the treatment accorded border crossings by land in respect of Mexico and Canada. Clearly, trans border crossings and ocean travel are viewed by the Americans as being of lesser ranking in terms of security risks than is air travel.

Notwithstanding the lobbying efforts that must be continued at the highest political levels for similar treatment to the cruise business, it is critical that the key stakeholders of the regional tourist industry intensify their campaigns in US markets to get travellers to acquire passports. The challenge that has been presented will, I am sure, open up opportunities for even more creative means to promote our destinations, and in the process, sensitise potential visitors about the new requirement. As of now, hoteliers, tourist boards, airlines, travel agents and tour operators have been running infomercials, but there needs to be a heightening of awareness as the deadline approaches.

The Caribbean has been benefiting from the fear of terrorism in certain parts of the world since 9/11, and is generally seen as a relatively safe area for travel. Consequently, visitor arrivals in this region have recovered quickly and we are now enjoying real growth. This is even truer for the cruise business, with the Caribbean becoming dominant in that business. Jamaica has done better than the average in the growth of stopover visitor arrivals, as well as in cruise passengers. For the current calendar year, we have indeed been experiencing accelerated growth rates in both areas.

While the cruise side of our business will be further enhanced by the extended grace period granted to it, there are justifiable fears among the hoteliers that this may be partly at the expense of land-based tourism. With a projected 1.2 million stopover visitors from the USA this year and on the basis of the current level of such visitors who travel on documents other than passports, there is substantial work to be done by Jamaica in particular, to mitigate the potential damage of the bias towards the cruise business. This work will not be made easy by any lethargy by American travellers towards acquiring passports.
