They were then the victims of a mass genocide in which the majority of the Arawak/Taino were practically wiped out by the Spanish. There is a small group of the Kalina/Caribs in some islands The Europeans decided to stay and had tobacco plantations. They first brought indentured servants from Ireland. They didn't last long in the climate so they looked for another source-African slaves. As the slave trade lasted over hundreds of years. The largest ethnic group in the Caribbean is of African descent. After slavery was abolished, many slaves left the plantations and the whites needed another labour source.
