I grew up on the adventure novels of the 1930s-50s when travel in itself was still a big adventure and the golden age of romance was still very much alive; whole unexplored countries in darkest Africa, awe-inspiring architecture in stations and airports, and the prestige and mystery that often went with a long journey on a propellor-driven aeroplane, a steam train or a tired tramp steamer. Now the world is a much smaller place, is it still possible to capture some of the old ways or are they gone for good? For me waiting in Heathrow for a gigantic jumbo jet that's all plastic and battery-seating just doesn't do it- and with cheap fares, even the most formerly inaccessable corners of the globe are frequented by backpackers and holidaymakers. I want to feel the essence of the smoky, luxurious departure lounges of every Humphrey Bogary picture, or the thrill of escaping to some remote spot on the globe untouched by civilisation as in Beau Geste.
