Don't stress about not fitting in, it's personalities and attitudes that matter more than clothes. However, don't carry valuables openly, it just makes you stand out as someone to be pickpocketed if you're going onto ferries etc. (esp Zanzibar, just keep them in your personal bag. Also note some of these ferries require you to store your larger bags in the luggage store so don't keep valuables in them as you wont have them with you and it's an insane crush when you go to collect them!)
Tanzania is a country to barter in so make sure you do or else you'll get ripped off (the rule is, if there is a price tag - it's that price, if not - barter.)
Enjoy yourself and talk to people, try the food (ugali is great when you get the hang of it, and there are so many fruits to try too), wave to people on the roads (but don't take pictures of people unless you ask beforehand)
Most importantly - HAVE FUN! It's a wonderful country and has so much to offer.
References :
2-3 weeks in Tanzania in 2009

tanzania travel advice?
I am a 15 year old girl, I live in the US, and I'm going on a service/exploration trip in Tanzania this summer. I'm super excited - I love to travel and see the world. I'm active and adventurous, and I'm aware that it's going to be a wild experience, so I'm ready to be completely open and set for anything. I'll be traveling all over Tanzania - climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, teaching English at schools, going to Zanzibar. My question is, do you have any advice? I know I'm definitely not going to go unnoticed there - obviously I'll look like a "Westerner" with my clothes and everything, but I also have fair skin, light brown hair and blue eyes. I speak French fluently in addition to English. I'm ready to learn some Swahili! Anyways, advice is appreciated, and if you've been to Tanzania then tell me anything and everything you know!! Thank you!!
by the way - I'll be there for the entire month of july and a little into august (5 weeks)
